Contest Rules

Web Site Qualifications:

  1. You must be enrolled as a full time undergraduate or graduate student at a college or university during the Spring 2008 semester. Proof of enrollment must be supplied to the CCSC: Central Plains Conference Steering Committee upon request.
  1. A web site developed outside of a class, for which the developer was paid, is not eligible for this contest. The CCSC Central Plains Conference Steering Committee reserves the right to determine proof of eligibility from the appropriate groups and student.
  1. A web site site is free to incorporate materials developed prior to the contestant's entry into college. However, the majority of the work represented in a web site should have occurred during the contestant's collegiate tenure. The parts of web site developed prior to the contestant's entry into college should be clearly marked in the source code files for the web site.
  1. During the judging period Monday, March 17, 2008 through Saturday, April 05, 2008 no changes to the web site will be permitted. It is recognized that in the case of dynamically generated pages the displayed content may change. This is acceptable. However, no changes to page layout, application architecture, or server side code are allowed during the judging period. The CCSC Central Plains Conference Steering Committee reserves the right to eliminate contestants for this violation.
  1. A student may only enter one web site.
  1. A student is only eligible to win a prize in one category.
  1. Web sites that received a placement during last year’s contest are not eligible for this year’s contest.

Contest Organization:

  1. Any type of web site may be submitted to the contest as long as this web site meets the qualifications stated above.

  1. There will be two rounds of judging.

  • Round One: Judging will occur during the period listed in the Schedule of Dates and Times.  Ten web sites will be selected to advance to the Final Round

  • Final Round: The judging in this round will occur during the Consortium for Computing in Small Colleges: Central Plains Conference.

  1. Web sites selected for the final round must be presented by their author at the Consortium of Computing in Small Colleges: Central Plains Conference. Arrangements for travel to and lodging at the conference are the responsibility of the student. Conference fees for finalists will be waived. The date and time of the final round of judging is listed in the Schedule of Dates and Times.

  2. Awards are:

  • Best overall web site - $100

  • Best use of technology - $50

  • Best visual design/layout - $50

  • Best scholarly content - $50
  1. All entries will be displayed on the page: Submitted Pages.

  2. Winners will be announced at the conference.

Submission of a Web Site

  1. Entries are registered using the form provided on the page entitled, Register a Web Site. All entries must be registered and the web submitted as outlined in 2 by the date and time listed in the Schedule of Dates and Times.  Receipt of entry will be verified by email within 24 hours.  If receipt of entry is not verified within this period, it is the responsibility of the entrant to contact the contest registrar at ssigman@drury.edu.

  2. Submitted pages must be hosted on the contest web site.  Directions for physically submitting an entry as a Zip file are included on the registration form.  Please note that completing the registration form in an of itself does not constitute an entry into the web site contest.  The registration process is not complete until an installable set of pages have been received.  Hyperlinks in all pages should be absolute links to external pages, or relative links to pages within the web site. Server relative links should not be used.  

  3. If a web requires server side facilities that cannot be provided on the contest web site, then arrangement to house the web on an alternate server may be made with the contest registrar, ssigman@drury.edu.  Pages housed on an external server must accessible at the registered URL during the Round One judging and the Final Round judging times as indicated in the Schedule of Dates and Times.  The source for all pages housed on an external server must be submitted during the registration process. Failure to do so will be considered failure to complete registration. Furthermore, only the content of pages housed on an external server may change. The page layout, application architecture, and server side code must remain unchanged during the judging period.

  4. All pages must be viewable using Netscape Navigator(TM) 6.0 or higher and Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher on a Win-98 PC.

  5. Submissions should adhere to the current legal requirements concerning copyright, fair use, First Amendment, trademark, defamation, and linking and framing considerations. Students will be expected to obtain the necessary permission to use copyrighted information on a web page and to appropriately document this information on the web page and in the HTML code.  Proof of written premission to use copyrighted or trademarked material must be provided to the contest judges upon request. Copyright or trademark violations will result in disqualification of a web site by the judges. An on-line resource for such questions may be found at http://www.bitlaw.com/.

Judging

  1. Judging will be by the members of the Steering Committee of the Consortium for Computing in Small Colleges: Central Plains Conference or by those selected by the Steering Committee's Web Page Contest Committee.

  2. All decisions of the judges are final.

  3. Judging Criteria: The following criteria will be used in judging during both rounds.

  • Web Site Content and Presentation

    • Goals of web site clearly communicated

    • Content is well organized

    • Content is proper for audience

    • Content is complete

    • Each page has contact and date/year information

    • Correct grammar/spelling

    • Information on the web site engages the user

    • Contestants are encouraged to develop web sites using the User Agent Accessibility Guidelines.          

  • Visual Design/Layout

    • Web site layout

    • Individual web page layout

    • Ease of movement in site

    • Global site navigation appropriate

    • Style appropriate for medium and audience

    • Appropriate use of images, audio, or video

    • Aesthetic appeal of design (color, fonts, text readability and legibility, etc.)

    • Appropriate graphic size

    • Graphics do not appear pixilated

    • Screen resolution appropriate

    • Links on site are appropriate, working and clear

  • Technical Features/Interactivity

    • Database access (Create, Read, Update, Delete)

    • Dynamic generation of content

    • Logical structure of site

    • Load time for pages is reasonable

    • Dynamic Interaction

    • Security

    • Quality of client-side scripting

    • CSS Usage

    • Use of other programming languages/features (JSP, ASP, PHP, Perl, CGI scripts, DHTML,, HTML, etc.

  1. Presentation quality will also be a judging criteria during the Final Round.
